ABOUT THE BAND: THE HILLBILLIES FROM MARS

The Hillbillies From Mars have been rocking the contradance scene in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1982.

Kevin Carr:  fiddle, bagpipes, accordion, banjo, vocals, storytelling

Kevin's powerful fiddling forms the backbone of the Hillbillies' French Canadian and Irish repertoire. In addition, he adds musical texture through his virtuosity on the Irish bagpipes and diatonic accordion. Kevin is also an accomplished storyteller, and delights audiences young and old with tales from Celtic and Appalachian sources.

Paul Kotapish: mandolin, guitar, percussion
Paul's versatility on the mandolin and guitar have made him a long-time favorite in the traditional music scene. His rock solid rhythms and harmonic textures form an integral part of the Hillbillies' sound. Paul has recorded and toured internationally with several bands, including Kevin Burke's Open House.

Daniel Steinberg:  keyboards, flute, percussion

Daniel's polyrhythmic piano/synthesizer backup and dynamic flute playing fill out the band's sound. The Hillbillies perform many of his original dance tunes and feature his innovative arrangements of traditional material. Daniel's workshops in French Country Dance and Instant Choir have received rave reviews at dance festivals around the country.

The Hillbillies combine their love and dedication to Celtic and American traditional fiddle music with a healthy dose of their own "folk roots" of rock 'n' roll, swing, Latin and African beats, forging a new tradition of dance music

SATURDAY AFTERNOON — CONTRA DANCE WORKSHOPS / DANCING

Workshops  1:00pm-3:00pm

Caller workshop with Jacqui Grennan
Learn to call contras - a rare opportunity whether you are a novice or an experienced caller.
Jacqui Grennan will show you how to call and have fun doing it!

If you have ever thought about calling Contra Dances? This is your opportunity to give it a shot. Jacqui Grennan, from SoCal, will be leading a workshop. It will be for both new and experienced callers. You may consider yourself to be an introvert but getting behind this mic is a no pressure opportunity. Jacqui will show you the tricks of the trade. If you are experienced, but perhaps haven’t called in a while, this will be an opportunity to “get back in the saddle”. The workshop is from 1 to 3pm followed by a contra dance where you will have a chance to practice your newly learned (or refreshed) skills.

Pole Dance and Fitness Rogue Valley 700 Mistletoe Rd Suite 103, Ashland, OR 97520 (Near the Bellview Grange)

Musicians workshop with the Hillbillies
Perhaps you play a folk instrument and want to learn to play for Contras. For both novice and experienced dance musicians!

If you play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, keyboard, bass or other appropriate musical instrument, here is your opportunity to learn the basics of playing for dance. If you know a few tunes, played in a jam, perhaps Celtic or Old Time or Bluegrass, you can play for contra dances. The fellows in the Hillbillies from Mars (Kevin, Daniel and Paul), who have played for dances and taught workshops for years will get you started and/or give crucial hints for playing for dances. How to start; how to end; and how to make the dancers move. They are all easy to learn skills.
The Musicians Workshop will be from 1 to 3pm at the Bellview Grange 1050 Tolman Creek Road, Ashland, OR 97520

Afternoon Dance
Then from 3 to 5pm there will be an opportunity to practice calling or playing or just dancing. Please join us to dance at the Bellview Grange 1050 Tolman Creek Road, Ashland, OR 97520
